It is official. We terrorize the Rad Onc department each time we are there.
Lately, our days have been longer so we seem to hang out in Daddy's departement after work longer. We need a new game plan to keep Haakon and Marit entertained. Now that Marit is so mobile, I have two happy, often very dirty looking children going in different directions.
I used to think BK (before kids) that I would never be one of those mothers who went out in public with children that were dirty and had mismatched clothes and food stains and crusties on their face from lunch or a runny nose. Well now AK (after kids) I have discovered that perhaps that goal was a bit too lofty.
Haakon, and Marit now too, love to play outside and are often very dirty when I pick them up after work. I try to get most of the dirt off with a half dozen baby wipes. Shake the sand from the shoes and dig it out from between their fingers, but that does not leave them squeaky clean by no means. Don't get me wrong, Monica takes great care of them and cleans them well after their morning play and after lunch. There is just only so much you can do with a little girl who refuses to wear a bib and insists on feeding herself.
Our routine usually is;
Exit car upon arrival to parking garage
Carry Marit in the over the shoulder baby holder or let Haakon push her in the umbrella stroller.
Haakon leads the way to the department stopping occasionally to point out things of interest, or sick people who he feels sad for.
Enter the department through the main doors into the waiting room or through the secure doors with the code if the main doors are locked. First stop is saying hi to Becky the nurse or the girls at the front desk, Diane, Nina, and Cheronda. Next it is to venture to the resident's room to see when Daddy thinks we can go home. Then we may venture over to the fish tank and watch the fishes. Visit with patients that are waiting to be treated, walk the halls, write on the marker board, get a drink of water with a special bendy straw that Becky keeps for Haakon. A nice routine and all but it is getting old so the munchikins have invented some new games to entertain themselves.
- dump the trash cans
- pull all the file drawers out to search for goodies
- Knock over the patient charts
- monkey with the thermostate
- turn off and on the lights
I have coloring pages and markers and color forms but that is not enough. The toys only work for a short while. Perhaps we need to bring in more. A whole suitcase full. Now, where can I store these toys? We need a family room, but until then we will stick with our routine, so far we have not been kicked out. I just feel bad that they have never seen the children clean and cute, except in pictures. 2 more hours till we run through our routine again. So happy tomorrow is Friday! Daddy is off and we are heading to Austin to visit with Uncle Dave and Aunt Claire! We can't wait!Comments:Nikki Massmann: For some reason my entire comment didn't post. Anyway, you always know how to capture the joys of motherhood in just the right way. My aunt always says that busy-ness in children is a sign of intelligence. If that's true, I bet our kids are freaking Einsteins, huh?Nikki Massmann: BK and AK - I love it Rebekah! You always know how to capture theAdd a comment:

Monday my little Marit took the longest nap ever (for her) 3 hours plus. My big boy Haakon did not nap however. (much to my dismay)
When 2 hours past that Marit had been sleeping I felt like, "Wow, she is really having a good nap today!" 2 1/2 hours passed and my thought was, "She will be up any second now". 3 hours and then some passed, "Ok, I am starting to worry about her; I know I should have turned on the monitor".
I could not take it any longer so I tip toed to her door and slowly cracked it open to peak inside. To my surprise, Marit was awake, sitting up in her crib and playing with her new favorite dolly of mine, the winter Madeline. I blinked a few times to make sure I was not seeing a mirage or something. My daughter never wakes up and plays, she wakes up and screams bloody murder until I come rescue her from her beautiful crib with the 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets.
I must have stood their awhile watching her play and talk to the dolly. Then she peered through the bars of the crib, she had spotted me through the tiny crack in the door. She started to wave me in with her hand, beckoning me in with her sweet voice. I praised her as I opened the door and came to her crib. What a sweet girl you are to play and talk to your dolly. We stayed in her room a bit longer playing dollies and putting on pretend lip gloss before Haakon joined us and gave us both pedicures with the pretend pink and red polish. Oh do our toes look pretty now.

He did it!!!!
Ok, well maybe with a little force, perssuasion, and some sweat and tears, but Haakon finally poo pooed on the potty!!!!!!!!!!!
The expression on his face when it went in was priceless! He was shocked that he actually did it. And you can about guess what he said or asked once he hopped off the potty.... you guessed it. "Can we go to Target and get my HUMMER now?" Unfortunetly with the weather conditions so bad (tropical storms) we did not venture to Target at 9:30pm to get the HUMMER but we promised Haakon that after work on our way home we would be stopping at Target so he could pick out the HUMMER.
You can now picture us standing in the cars and trucks isle for a good 15 to 20 minutes playing with all the toys before he is ready to settle on his favorite.
I just hope and pray that the next time we won't have a struggle when it comes time to sit on the potty again!Comments:Auntie Bridget: I am so proud of you Haakon! Good work mom & dad.Kels: Haakon, we are sooo proud of you! You need to tell Beau how cool it is to sit on the potty and how much more fun it is than wearing a diaper! Diapers are for babies and big boys go potty on the toilet! Good job buddy!Rachel: Congrats Haakon!!!! What a big boy you are!!!!Add a comment:

It is official, Marit has big front teeth! Her first one poked through over the weekend. Too cute. She is walking more then crawling now. Marit loves cupboards and discovering what is in side of them. She loves to have her toes polished and play with Haakon's cars. She is too adorable when you hand her a dolly or a little stuffed animal she hugs and squeals with delight. I just love it!!!!
Haakon is making great strides on the potty. He keeps his underwear dry even through the night. Our next big hurdle is going number 2 or poo poo in the potty. He still would prefer I put a diaper on him. Yesterday he did start to go and finished on the potty. He asked if he could get a HUMMER now. (he asked cause we are bribing him with a HUMMER) I told him if he would poo poo on the potty without force and without first getting his underwear dirty, then he could get a HUMMER.
Poor Daddy has been so sick this weekend. He is on the mend but still at home today. We hope and pray the kids don't get this bad bug. Yesterday evening Haakon mentioned on several occasions that he was not feeling well. We decided that Haakon could stay home with Daddy today just in case. But Marit came with me to go to Monica's. I bet Daddy and Haakon will have a great Daddy and Son time. Perhaps they will paint and mow and trim too if they end up feeling really good. haha

A miracle happened! Haakon actually woke up dry and went on the potty with a little persuasion from Daddy! He even went to church in underwear and stayed dry. I always drop Marit off at the nursery and Grant always drops Haakon off at Sunday School. This time Grant said I was dropping him off because I was the one who let him out of the house in just spiderman underwear and he did not want to be blamed if and when Haakon decided to pee in them. Thankfully it all worked out and Haakon stuck to his promise of not peeing in them at church. It wasn't till after we got home that he had an accident. But Monday he did really well. We are so encouraged and proud of him.
Comments:Thayers: Oh Haakon! We are so proud of you! What a great job you did. Maybe I could send Brookie down there for a week or so and you could teach her how to go on the potty too. :)Add a comment:

Oh man.... I might have just done a very stupid thing. Haakon is tucked in bed wearing only underwear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only that, but he has a cup of water next to him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am just asking for trouble aren't I? Yeppers, I will be washing bedding tomorrow morning. Before I do that I will be shopping for laundry detergent to wash the bedding since I just ran out today!
Uff da!
It all started this morning when Haakon said he needed to change his diaper. Saturday at 7:15, I climb reluctantly out of bed. I was still a bit drowsy because one sweet girl was up even earlier hungry. Once to his room, Haakon insisted on wearing his Diego underwear. I reminded him that if he makes the decision to put the underwear on then he needs to make a conscious effort to use the potty. Well, 3 misses later it was back to a diaper. Now this evening he wants underwear back on for another try. Yikes!!! We put a night light on in the bathroom near his room so just in case he wakes up in the night he can go in and use the potty. If he wakes up dry and pee pees in the potty tomorrow, I will consider this a great miracle!!!
Marit is walking all over! She is so hilarious the way she pulls up on something to stand and then takes off as fast as she can. She usually falls forward. Her guardian angel is working overtime to catch her and pad those corners or steer her away from them. I have seen this occur countless times. She is so proud of herself and excited about her newly developing skill.
Her appointment went well. We were only there for an hour. That is shorter then normal. She just had 2 shots this time which did not make her run a temp. She weighed in less then I though. 19.9 Not sure on her height. I know they wrote it down somewhere. The doctor said she looked great. The worst part of going to the doctor is that point when the nurse leaves you in the room while you wait for the doctor to come. It feels like a cage. I can't stand it. Each time I am there, I read all these messages that are posted on the door and wall. "Do not let your child stand, climb, or jump on the table etc." I know I can't follow all those rules. It is impossible to make little ones sit still unless you sit on them or strap them down, which I can't do either. So here I am left to try my hardest to entertain them and pray that at the moment the doctor enters the room there is some peace and orderliness to our wait time. Which of course there never is. This time when the doctor entered the room Haakon and Marit were screaming at each other because they both wanted the fruit snack that fell to the floor. Neither one got it. Oh well, now that that wait was over, the second worst part of our visit was ahead. Waiting for the shots. Yes, this is even worse then the shots themselves. You just never know who or what kind of families you may see in the waiting room. Some are friendly, others are too themselves, some have older kids and some have kids the same age and then there are the 2 week old babies there too. By this time in the visit the shyness has completely worn off. My kids are usually the friendly type that see the other children and want to play with them or share the other child's snack. Haakon does not like to be ignored and neither does Marit. They sure know how to cause a seen or stage a look at me here I am protest! It never seems that the snacks and toys and books I pack are good enough to compete with what the other children have.Comments:Add a comment:
