Our baby girl is 1. She has survived her first year. Along with that we have survived her first year too!
We had a great day celebrating her birthday. It has been just wonderful having my parents here visiting this week. How special that they could be here over Marit's birthday. Nana made nummy french toast for breakfast. After breakfast she had presents to open and even Haakon had a present to open. I think Haakon loved the opening part better hen Marit. Marit got expcited about what was inside though. There was even a new dolly with a special dolly quilt that Nana made. Too cute!
This afternoon we went to the Island and Haakon and Papa checked out the railroad museum and Nana, Marit and I ventured down the historic strand checking out the shops. We had brought the stroller butat the last minute I decided to carry her in the sling instead because it is hard to navigate the Strand in a stroller. I am convinced that Marit has inspector gadget arms. She can reach so far. We had a couple close calls. Especially with a sting ray figurine. Oh I just shuttered at the thought of her knocking that over and it chipping and having to purchase it. I have never always wanted a figurine of a sting ray, especially one that cost $40. After daddy got done at the hospital he met us at the Rain Forest Cafe. That was the first time we hd been there. We got seated next to gorillas that every now and then would cause quite the ruckus. At first we thought we might have to move. Marit almost cried when she first saw them but soon settled and was facinated by them. It is not often you go to a restraunt where the entertainment provides you with the opportunity to enjoy a meal. Then again it is not often we go to a restraunt. When we got a home we made a chocolate cake and before we could even finish singing happy birthday, those little inspector gadget arms reached over and swiped a big chunk out of the cake. Oh did she love that.

OUr little Marit is such a joy and a blessing. I can hardly remember life before she was born. This day is truly a great celebration. Thank Cuzin Kim, Christiansen family, and Widman family for the sweet Happy Birthday messages you sent to Marit. I will be sure to get the picture for you Kim of her and her new phone, which by the way she loves!!!

Grandma Seeger:  The Rain Forest Cafe is so interesting with aquariums, parrots, rain and thunder to accent the wonderful menu. How we would love to see Marit get acquainted with the gorillas. What fun!

It is too cute how even just shy of one Marit can be such a girly girl. The other day while doing some cleaning she happened upon a little purse. If I remember correctly, I purchased it in the dollar spot at Target when they were having a sale. (long before Marit was born) Not exactly sure what had prompted me to buy a little bitty pink purse, but now here was Marit and to her this little purse was the discovery of the century. She put that little purse handle on her arm and was so excited. I told her it was now her purse and she can take it with her. Next thing I know she goes toddling off in the other direction and reappears moments later dragging my purse to me. We dug through my purse and found her a lip gloss to put into hers and her new library card as well. That little purse never left her side the whole rest of the afternoon and evening. Even now I see her toting it around and finding things to put in it. What she really wanted to put in her purse was my cell phone. Much to her dismay I would not share that item with her. But I am hoping that she is going to be so excited when she opens her birthday present and finds her very own pink Sleeping Beauty Flip Phone. I hesitated before buying it that it is recommended for children 3 and up, but she is one going on 3. At least she thinks she is.

This morning on our commute to work there was an accident on the bridge to Galveston Island. We had a 45 minute wait just sitting on the road waiting for it to be cleared. We turned off the car and let the kids out of their seat and played games. Thankfully our rice krispy bar we had for emergencies was ready and available when Marit would not stop whining. She devoured it! After finishing her bar she was signing for more. She was furious when I told her I did not have any more. So I did what any mother with a screaming child, I dug around for more food. Luckily there was an oatmeal cookie hidden in a pocket. Looks fresh, it was in plastic, can’t be too stale. She enjoyed that too.

Yesterday while playing at the park with the Hernandez family it went from a balmy 80 something to 60 something in 2 seconds flat! We could see dark skies moving in and then a breeze and a few drops of rain and all of a sudden the temps dropped to the sixties. The boys thought it felt great! They had been playing hard and had worked up quite the happy sweat. It cut our play time a bit short as we took the drastic change in weather as a sign it was time to head home for a long nap perhaps or I hoped anyway. The cooler temps feel so refreshing. I opened the windows for the first time since March and let in the fresh cool air. Of course the neighbor kids stopped over after school as they often do on Mondays, this time bundled up in hooded sweatshirts asking why on earth I had opened the windows.
Perhaps this cool front is perfect timing before Nana and Papa come to visit. I think they are hoping for a little warmer temps but not humid and 80s.

Oh, back to Marit, I should explain the resent uploading of pictures of our bruised little Marit. One minute my 2 precious children were playing so well together while I was making a quick lunch and then the next minute I hear Marit crying her heart out. I rush to the living room to find her on the floor crying and Haakon a very safe distance away adjusting the floor boards of his train table. The question I always find myself asking him, What happened? What did you do? His response was, “Oh, I knocked her off my table.” I demanded to know if knocking his sister off was a good thing or a bad thing. He of course said, “It was a good thing, because you told her not to stand on my table.”
I think to myself as I scoop up the crying Marit, oh, great, this is still all my fault as a mom, I can’t ever say it just perfect for Mr. smarty pants over here who takes the opportunity to discipline his sister for doing something naughty and dangerous. I suppose I am going to have to remember to tell Marit not to do something and then tell Haakon that if she does do it then tell me and not take action into his own hands, but then if I do, do that, am I creating a tattle tale instead? Just for the record, Haakon was in very deep trouble for causing his sister to fall and get hurt. He showed remorse and apologized especially after seeing her bruises and swelling form. Cousin Kelsey is right, when you schedule to have pictures taken you run the risk of someone getting hurt! We had pictures scheduled and had to postpone till Marit’s bruising and swelling goes down. On the other hand, I am happy that Kelsey’s family pictures turned out so cute without anyone getting new bumps before the flash of cameras.

Today was hard. Quite challanging. My sweet Haakon has such a strong will. It is only by the Grace of God that I can make it through some of these days without loosing it. We had plans to go to Target but they got cancelled because I told Haakon we could only go if he was good. Good did not happen. Thankfully Mom gave me a great pep talk and lots of encouraging words. I sure needed that. Towards the end of the day Haakon was doing better. Daddy came home and at supper time he asked if we had gone to the store. We told him the reason why and he asked Haakon why he was a bad boy today. Haakon started out by saying, "Well, there is this bug.." Grant interupted him and told him not to change the subject and tell him why he was naughty. He then started again with this bug that he said was making him naughty. This perked my ears. I inquired more, Haakon, how did this bug make you naughty? He told me to do naughty things, was his response. We told Haakon that if this bug ever tells you to do naughty things again to tell it to go away because you want to be a good boy and do what is right. He then pointed towards the opposite end of the kitchen and told us the bug was over there, and asked if we could see it. We looked but could not see any bug. We told Haakon to tell the bug to go away. He did just that. He said, "Go away bug, I want to be a good boy." We reminded him to that he can always pray to Jesus and ask him to help you be a good boy.

He was a good boy the rest of the evening before going to bed. Now, I don't know if Haakon is just being creative or if this bug really does exsist. For now I will pray that this bug stays far away an no others come around to take it's place. If anyone reading this has experience with getting rid of bugs like this that turn sweet children into monsters, I would love to find out where you get the bug spray!

Nikki Massmann:  Oh Rebekah I love your journal entries. I used to be one of those girls who would see kids throwing fits in the store and think, MY kids will never do that. YEAH RIGHT. I thought that until we were in Kmart when she was about 2 or so and freaked out over a Dora Umbrella. I mean freaked - people probably thought she was rabid the way spit was flying out of her mouth. But it does get better as they grow older and have a little more control over their impulses. The bug thing is pretty clever though - I tell ya raising children who are intelligent is the biggest lesson in patience on the planet! :) Well hon you're not alone - the ages from 2 till about 4 or so were really tough with Anna. It is a complete grace of God that I didn't pull my hair out - or hers for that matter! haha!

It is facinating to me how nothing stays the same for long when you have little children. You would think I would be used to it by now but I am not. Before Marit was born I poured over double strollers and dreamed of the perfect one. It seemed to always be the one that was ridiculously expensive though. God found another way to provide us with a double stroller from friends who lent us theirs. We used it quite a bit and now it is rare I use it at all. Marit would much rather walk or be carried and Haakon loves to walk. You almost need at least 4 different strollers. Same with shoes. How when I find these adorable shoes on sale and buy them a bit bigger so they are sure to last a while and then all of a sudden they are out growing them and I know have to find new shoes again. Nothing is constant, it is always everchanging. Oh except for runny noses and finger prints on the windows.
Just when I think taking the kids into a store is getting easier, Haakon has a melt down. Then the next time we go, Haakon is good as gold and Marit is the trouble maker. Never know what a day will bring.
Today is Daddy's birthday and our plan is to make a yummy cake for him and have a little party. The kids are excited. Even Marit is starting to understand about the whole birthday thing. She will have a blast when her day comes.
Daddy just got home from his Thursday late night hockey game. He won! Glad it is a good start to his birthday. He is all excited about his great saves and the win! If it wasn't too late we sure would like to go see him play.

These past few weeks have just flown by. We had so much fun visiting with Dave and Claire in Austin. Haakon and Marit were constantly in and out of the pool. Almost grew fins.

Now we are anticipating Nana and Papa's trip to see us the end of the month.

Who knows how many changes will take place till then. Will I ever keep up?
